This Satirical Thriller

Coralie Fargeat's daring critique tackles the oppressive nature of feminine aesthetics and the perceived horrors of advancing years. Demi Moore presents an inspired performance as Elisabeth, a mature film star forced into presenting an aerobics show on the small screen. Edged out thanks to her unscrupulous employer Harvey, played by Dennis Quaid, she seeks out an enigmatic and terrifying procedure known as the Substance. This creates a new version of herself named Sue, culminating in a steadily more parasitic dynamic among both women. October 17th, the streaming service Paramount+

The Woman in Cabin 10

This classic whodunit story features the talented actress in the role of Laura, an ace reporter who takes some time off from writing about global conflict to join a high-end voyage alongside a gravely sick Scandinavian billionaire and donor, her spouse, as well as other extremely wealthy individuals. However when a mysterious woman goes overboard one night and all passengers claims she was never there, her journalistic curiosity take over. Streaming currently, on Netflix

Presence

Soderbergh challenges his film-making abilities in this nifty ghostly tale captured wholly through the eyes of the phantom. As a family with Lucy Liu as Rebekah and troubled teenage daughter Chloe settles into their recent residence, the lens – representing the ghost – tracks their movements. Chloe seems conscious of the poltergeist, and it seems guarding her. However, the motive remains? It's a fun idea that remains concise, featuring a surprise that could catch you off guard. October 11th, multiple showings, Sky Cinema Premiere

The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent

The iconic actor fully commits to his eccentric image through this meta comedy caper. He acts as a self-obsessed celebrity playing himself who accepts a $1m payday to attend a festive event on the Spanish island for the wealthy Javi, played by Pedro Pascal. Contacted by government spies to investigate the potential kingpin, the actor's unconventional method comes in handy. Saturday 11 October, 9pm, on Channel 4

The Black Phone

The director's claustrophobic thriller stands strong even without a sequel. Located in the late 70s in Denver, a series of child abductions has rendered the children anxious. Once Finney is taken by the kidnapper and imprisoned in a cellar, he fears a terrible outcome. Yet the non-functional line mounted nearby repeatedly calls, with ghostly voices giving advice, while the prophetic visions from his sibling Gwen may be his salvation. A genuinely scary movie. Saturday 11 October, nighttime, Film4

This Dramatic Portrait

In the struggle between spirituality and money, the winner is obvious for Mammon in Showalter's delightfully tacky true story about the fallen religious broadcaster and her criminal husband. Andrew Garfield plays the corrupt Bakker, who proclaims early on, asserting religious justification for riches. He and Tammy Faye set about monetising the nation's spiritual convictions. It's a riot of tacky decor, bad makeup and bad faith, though the lead actress achieves to present Tammy Faye in a likable light. Tuesday 14 October, 1.15am, on Film4

Black Bag

This week's second offering from the filmmaker is a intelligence thriller as precise like the turtlenecks used by Michael Fassbender's intelligence officer. He is tasked to identify a double agent inside the organization from a group of five – including is his spouse. The two stars excel of calm composure, so a delicious mental battle of truth or lie takes place. Additional actors take part the intelligent intelligence fun. October 17th, 8.05am, 12.55pm, 8pm, the Sky channel
