Patients Discontinuing Weight-Loss Medications Gain Back Weight Far More Rapidly Compared to Dieters

Weight management involves ongoing approaches.

A recent study suggests that patients who come off new GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on reduced body mass much more quickly than those who end traditional diet and exercise plans.

Research printed in a leading health publication demonstrates that while overweight individuals often shed substantial amounts of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"Users using such drugs must be aware of the danger of quick weight regain when the medication ends," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery means a return to starting weight within about a year and a half.

Analyzing Approaches

The analysis, which reviewed 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the effects of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.

The team note that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone generally see a less rapid creep back—perhaps 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

Understanding the Rapid Rebound

Experts suggest the way of the jabs accounts for the accelerated regain.

These medications imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls appetite.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels several times higher than normal may cause the system to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and may also diminish sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement leads to appetite is unsuppressed, making binge eating much more probable."

An Ongoing Condition?

Health authorities suggest the injections for people with obesity-related health risks, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals contend that, considering the high risk of relapse, the therapy should be considered life-long.

This perspective is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "underscore the persistent nature of obesity," akin to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

User Accounts

Users who have come off the jabs describe a sudden resurgence of appetite.

"It felt as if something flipping and I was suddenly extremely hungry," described an individual.

This challenge is worsened if individuals have not developed permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.

Growing Use

Figures indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with interest remaining high.

  • Adoption is more common among females compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
  • A large proportion access the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, clinicians stress that while GLP-1 drugs are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a magic solution and lasting health benefits relies on combined behavioural changes.
